Learn how to counteract these changes naturally

Menopause is a crucial stage in every woman’s life, as it marks the natural end of her fertile years. The perimenopausal phase, the time prior to the cessation of menstruation, is normally characterized by a reduction in the levels of estrogen produced by the body, which can cause symptoms related to the mechanisms controlling the size of blood vessels, including hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disturbances.

For many years, the traditional treatment has been hormone replacement therapy, but due to serious concerns about the elevated risk for certain chronic illnesses, such as cancer, more and more women are seeking alternative methods. Some of the most recent treatments are based on supplements enriched with phytoestrogens, which are plant-derived compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen and that can prevent or treat certain illnesses.

Phytoestrogens are steroid-free, plant-derived compounds of varying chemical structure, which are found in fruits, vegetables and grains, specially red clover, soy and alfalfa.

n order to understand phytoestrogens, you must first understand that estrogens are, in essence, the female hormones responsible for a woman’s sexual and physical development, among other functions. Obviously, the production of these hormones gradually changes during menopause.

There are various types of phytoestrogens, but the most common are coumestans, lignans and isoflavones. These compounds have a similar chemical structure to the female hormones produced in your body.

Isoflavones (genistein and daidzein), which are the most potent phytoestrogens in terms of their estrogen-like effects, are found almost exclusively in legumes, such as soy, garbanzos, lentils and beans. Red clover (trifolium pratense) is also a significant source of isoflavones, as it contains components that are metabolized into genistein and daidzein once it is consumed.

Soy supplements also contain these compounds, which are subjected to various metabolic actions in your body. However, it is very important that you use a product that is guaranteed by the manufacturer to be purified and standardized so that your body will absorb it correctly.

According to the Central American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there have been numerous studies suggesting that these compounds are beneficial “to the heart, the bones, the breasts and overall health during the period prior to menopause, also known as climacteric period.” Nevertheless, these compounds also have their detractors. The one thing everyone agrees on is that they do not involve any health risks.

Furthermore, they have been shown to inhibit the development of certain types of cancer, a property that has caused them to gain widespread popularity among users.

Numerous benefits have been attributed to isoflavones, such as:

1) Anti-carcinogenic benefits: These compounds can help prevent prostate, colon and breast cancer, thanks to their antioxidant action.

2) Cardiac benefits: A diet rich in isoflavones helps prevent various cardiovascular diseases, such as dyslipidemia, or metabolic disorders that carry increased risks of heart disease.

3) Immune system benefits: It is thought that the isoflavones in red clover and soy may contribute to the healthy functioning of the immune system, as they bolster the activity of white blood cells.

Red clover (trifolium pratense)

This plant, which has been used since time immemorial to feed sheep in the United Kingdom, has also been used for medical purposes in the treatment of ailments of the respiratory system, especially in Asian cultures.

Red clover, which contains the isoflavones genistein and daidzein, is used to alleviate certain menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes. Although there has not yet been sufficient research to support claims of its effectiveness as a cancer treatment, it has certainly caught the attention of the scientific community.

What other measures can be taken to counteract the symptoms of menopause?

1) To combat minor hot flashes, it is recommended that you exercise regularly and practice breathing slowly and deeply.

2) A high body mass index can predispose you to more frequent or more severe hot flashes, although there has been no research to date on whether or not weight reduction causes a corresponding reduction in hot flashes.

3) Women who are non-smokers tend to experience fewer symptoms.

4) As the North American Menopause Society mentions with regard to the treatment of symptoms related to the mechanisms controlling the size of blood vessels, women should consider taking isoflavone supplements when their hot flashes are not the result of another condition.

Regardless of the above information, it is always recommended that you consult your primary care physician before you begin treatment, so that he or she can evaluate any contraindications, for example, if you are lactating or have any medical conditions that could lead to complications.

It seems like one of the symptoms that comes along with menopause is weight gain. The statistics are that more women will gain the most amount of weight during perimenopause than any other time in life. This is most definitely the time of life that it is smart to see the doctor. Heading to your regular doctor will help to clear up what is most likely behind the weight gain that is disturbing you. It is also the best place to go for smart diet and nutrition advice.

When the middle age menopausal spread begins to creep in ever so quietly, the best thing for any woman to do is to take notice of the expanding areas they see in the mirror that begins to claim new territory. A close reflection of the past years will show a change in lifestyle habits and eating habits that have lead to this moment of truth that new changes need to be implemented ASAP. Menopause is not, nor has it ever been defined as weight gain, unless it is allowed by the individual. By simply changing eating habits and becoming more physically active the extra pounds won’t show up in the mirror. Too often, many women choose to do just the opposite and accept these unsightly changes.

Hormonal changes are also obvious reasons and will affect weight gain beyond any arguments. However, don’t be mislead to thinking that most of the weight gain is natural and uncontrollable. This simply is not true. Life style changes have a huge impact on the end results and will make a big difference including controlling any predisposition to weight gain that does affect some women during menopause. One very noticeable and changeable problems with women in this age realm, is the lack of physical exercise or activities that can help control their weight.

Exercise does a lot for the human body and mind. When women slow down with the amount of exercise that they do it creates changes in their bodies that encourage weight gain. The placement of the extra weight, around the abdomen, is directly related to the change in hormones. The tendency though to gain weight at all, even while eating the same amount of food, is usually due more to having a lesser amount of muscle mass from lack of exercise.

Less exercising means a diminishing of lean muscle mass. There is a natural lessening of muscle mass that naturally occurs with aging that is happening after menopause. When a person does not work to replace the lost muscle mass the composition of the body will adjust. It becomes more fat than muscle and that is where the trouble is. The muscles are what burn calories and without it eating the same food as always will mean increasingly more weight gained. The positive effects of exercising more instead of less are too strong to ignore.

Perimenopause is the phase of a woman’s life leading up to menopause. During this phase, the ovaries release eggs less regularly and begin to produce less estrogen and other hormones. Consequently, women may begin to have irregular menstrual cycles and experience symptoms that usually mark the onset of “the change.” In this article, we’ll discuss perimenopause and how to cope with the changes that are happening in your life.

Menopause actually occurs when a woman permanently stops having menstrual periods. Perimenopause is the transitional period of time before menstruation completely stops, and generally starts between one and six years before menopause.

Some experts believe that it can actually start up to 10 years before menopause. Women typically experience mood changes, changes in sexual desire, difficulty in concentrating, headaches, night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, joint and muscle aches, extreme sweating, frequent urination and symptoms that are similar to premenstrual syndrome.

Lifestyle counseling is important for all perimenopausal women, because good health habits can reduce the incidence of chronic health problems later in life. A healthy lifestyle should include good nutrition, exercise, and abstaining from smoking and drinking to excess.

A healthy diet, low in fat and high in grains, fruits, and vegetables can benefit women going through pre-menopause and menopause because it reduces their risk of hypertension, osteoporosis and weight gain. Adequate calcium intake is especially important to maintain bone density as estrogen levels decline. Women should get calcium from dietary sources, such as low-fat or non-fat dairy products, greens, broccoli, canned sardines and salmon, fortified orange juice and cereal.

In addition to eating a healthy, calcium rich diet, women going through perimenopause and menopause should step up their level of physical activity. Regular aerobic exercise helps to decrease hot flashes, depression, insomnia and weight gain.

Aerobic exercises offer additional benefits, such as reducing the risk of coronary artery disease, while weight-bearing exercises like weight lifting and jogging builds bone density. Peri menopausal women should be encouraged to perform moderate aerobic and weight-bearing exercise at least three times per week.

The years leading up to menopause don’t have to a roller coaster ride of physical and emotional ups and downs. If you are experiencing symptoms like fatigue, an irregular menstrual cycle and depression, then consult your doctor for treatment options that are available to you.

Even if you have a hectic schedule, women experiencing perimenopause and menopause have to make a commitment to taking care of their health in order to combat the drop in estrogen. Even minor lifestyle changes can significantly improve your overall feeling of wellness.

As the woman grows older gradually the ovaries start producing lesser estrogen which causes a new stage in a woman’s health history, the menopause. Now the stage starting few years earlier than menopause is called perimenopause, usually stating when woman is at her 40s.Perimenopause Symptoms

Few signs of depression appear in PMS and also perimenopause. Menopause does not cause depression, but the depression may happen in families. If you see that loss of appetite, insomnia, depression and generally loss of pleasure or interest in life are on the list, you are likely to suffer clinical depression. Feelings as above should be shared with a health care practitioner.

Many perimenopausal women experience mood changes such as anxiety, depression, mood swings and irritability. Almost 75 to 85 percentages of women have hot flashes and sleep problems during perimenopause. The frequency, intensity and duration vary. Its hot flashes and night sweats that causes sleep problems although sleep may become erratic yet without either of the two mentioned.Causes of Perimenopause

While a woman approaches menopause or enters perimenopause, she finds unexplained weight increase especially around her hips and waists no matter how hard she tries in losing excess weight. Actually, weight gain around abdomen is a very common complaint.

Menopause happens when a woman stops seeing menstrual periods permanently. The transitional phase before menstruation is completely stopped it is known as perimenopause. It is during this phase of time that huge rise and fall in hormones occur, which can create several of the signs.

Treatments for childhood cancer by “pelvic radiation therapy” or chemotherapy are referred to as a cause of early menopause.

Usually hysterectomy meaning removing the uterus only not the ovaries is not a cause for menopause. Although a woman has no longer periods but her ovaries still produce egg. Such a procedure can make menopause to take place earlier than the average.

The diagnosis of perimenopause

Most of the times the doctor makes the diagnosis according to the symptoms. Few Blood tests are prescribed for checking hormone levels but due to irregular fluctuations of the hormones it can be difficult to evaluate. Several blood tests in different occasions may help the evaluation.

What are the Perimenopause treatments?Phytestrogen Plants produce many chemical compounds that are vital to the function and health of plant. Whenever the humans eat the plants, they consume the chemical compounds. One group of these chemical compounds that the plant produces is called phytestrogens. More than 300 plants have phytestrogen compounds.

Before beginning any kind of cure for the perimenopause symptoms, a woman should have a physical exam which includes full discussion about her medical history. It is suggested to have a mammogram during the last one year prior to beginning the medical therapy. If the physical examination and medical history suggest, the doctor may prescribe a “bone densitometry”. The “bone density” testing is a very good idea. The doctor may order to carry out any additional tests, if required.

Usually occurring in the early 50′s of the life of a woman, menopause signifies the end of menstrual cycles. After this period, women will no longer be able to give birth to a child and therefore we can define menopause as the transition period from a reproductive life to a non reproductive one. It occurs due to the hormonal changes taking place in the body wherein the number of eggs in the ovary decreases to a very small quantity. At the start of menstrual cycles, a girl usually has about 4 million eggs which decrease considerably to 10,000 during menopause. Most of these eggs die out through a process called Atresia whereas a few of them are lost during the normal monthly cycles.

Menopause is classified in 2 stages- perimenopause and postmenopause. The Perimenopause stage usually sees a hormonal imbalance in your body and may last for a couple of years. Post this, comes the menopause stage during which menstrual cycles stop and the woman can no longer get pregnant. During this period the ovaries stop producing eggs. After this stage, comes the post menopause stage. Doctors believe that eggs develop a repelling effect towards FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) which is responsible for producing them thereby reducing the production of estrogen as well. It is this decrease in the level of estrogen and eggs that make the body unfit for having a baby. Menopause can also be caused due to the side effects of chemotherapy (treatment for cancer). While undergoing chemo, the vagina of a woman may get damaged thereby resulting in menopause.

Menopause is also seen after undergoing hysterectomy where the uterus of a woman is removed via surgery causing a change in the estrogen production. Such drastic changes may cause some hurt to your body. Moreover, the progesterone production in the body becomes almost zero as the age of a woman approaches mid 40′s. Progesterone too is fully responsible for the production of eggs by the ovaries in a woman’s body. No progesterone means no eggs. The after effects of menopause on some woman may be devastating because it can cause bone loss (osteoporosis) thus they are more prone to fractures. Not only this, it can also cause heart disorders which can be really detrimental to health. Hair loss and changes in hair thickness is commonly seen after menopause.

Whenever you feel some kind of discomfort it’s always better to consult a physician because he/she will help you solve this problem. The doctor will advise you certain natural changes like in taking low cholesterol food items in your lifestyle that will help you control menopausal symptoms. For controlling osteoporosis intake of large amounts of calcium should be taken and to prevent weight loss, regular exercising is advised. Apart from these natural treatment processes, applying creams on the vagina will help to get rid of vaginal dryness. The estrogen replacement therapy and hormonal replacement therapy can also help you overcome the symptoms of menopause.
